NYC Subway System

Subway Phot by MakingAllStops.com

The NYC subway system is a great way to get around the city. Gone are the graffiti covered cars of the 70's they have been replaced with modern air conditioned cars. Open 24/7 the subway system is a fairly clean and reliable way to get around Manhattan. For $3.00 you can get anywhere in the city- one way. Pick up an all-day MetroCard if your doing a lot of sight-seeing. You purchase your card in a machine in the station and insert it in the turnstile that’s it your are officially a New Yorker!

Subway NYC: Tips for Riding the Rails
from City Guide Magazine
If you've never visited New York City before, you might be feeling nervous about how to tackle NYC's famous transit system, the subway. It might seem impossibly complicated, but we have some tips to get you on the right track.

INTRODUCING 'THE WEEKENDER'
MTA launched "The Weekender," a new feature of www.MTA.info to transform the way riders navigate the subway system on weekends. This feature, which takes over the front page of MTA.info each weekend, makes it easy for subway riders to visualize exactly how weekend work will affect subway service. See 'The Weekender' for the current weekend.

Subway Maps:
The subway map is fairly straightforward to read. Lines are either local or express being named by the station or area at the final stop of the car. The lines are color and number coded and the sides and fronts of the trains and stations are clearly marked. You can find maps of the subway from the MTA: www.mta.info/maps/

Spend a little time on the map prior to getting on a platform it will save you a lot of headache. The station entrances are clearly marked and fairly easy to locate. Don’t be afraid of the subway but use your common sense. Don’t stand too close to the platform. Don’t stray too far out of an area if you don’t know where you are going. Look and walk like you know what you are doing at all times. Don’t travel alone late at night. Avoid the public restrooms in the Subways. If you need assistance ask an NYC transit cop or station attendant.
