New York was home to the very first department store in the United States, Marble Dry Goods Palace, which opened in 1846. Brooks Brothers is the oldest surviving clothier in the United States, dating back to the 1818. Other long-standing department stores that originated in NYC are: Lord & Taylor (1826), Macy's (1858), Bloomingdales (1861), and Saks Fifth Avenue (1924). Macy's first opened in 1858 as a "fancy dry goods" store. In the 1860's, Macy's introduced the very first in-store Santa Claus and the first holiday window displays. This Herald Square location is considered the world's largest store and features several restaurants and snack shops, personal shopping, gift registry and a souvenir shop.
