New York City Beer Gardens

The New York Times and New York Magazine have reported a recent revival in the popularity of beer gardens leading to a surge of openings around town that began in 2010.

Berry Park Rooftop Beer Garden

The Berry Park Rooftop Beer Garden in Williamsburg offers draught beers from Germany, Belgium, Scotland and England, a handful of bottled beers and wines, as well as special concoctions. The menu is both American and German, with a variety of sandwiches, salads and sausages. They also serve brunch.

Bier International

Bier International is Harlem's first beer garden, though it's actually the indoor version. They serve both international and domestic beers, an eclectic menu for lunch and dinner, plus brunch on weekends.

Biergarten at The Standard

Located at the Standard Hotel in the meat packing district, this outdoor Biergarten was rated 2010's best new beer garden by Time Out New York. It's located under the High Line and offers a classic German menu.

Bierhaus NYC

Bierhaus NYC, a Bavarian-style restaurant and bar is located 1-1/2 blocks from Grand Central Terminal. They offer a full-service bar with 24 taps and six varieties of Hofbräu beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Bierhaus NYC offers communal seating, a 50-foot balcony and a glass ceiling, as well as a fun atmosphere appropriate for all ages.

Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden

Since 1910, Bohemian Hall hall in Astoria has been a part of New York City history. It's the last original remaining Beer Garden in all of NYC. Here you'll find a great beer selection at reasonable prices, as well as an authentic Czech menu.

Der Schwarze Kölner

Der Schwarze Kolner is a low-key authentic German beer garden with German bar food. Here you'll find a great selection of German beers, long communal tables and a friendly staff. Note: as of this writing, Der Schwarze Kolner accepts cash only.

Hallo Berlin

Hallo Berline offers German beer by the mug, stein, humpen, pitcher or boot; plus German Schnapps, German cocktails, German fare, and a year-round beer garden.

Killmeyer's Old Bavarian Inn

This historical spot on Staten Island features a large outdoor beer garden, in addition to the indoor main dining room offering authentic German fare for lunch and dinner. Killmeyer's stocks a great variety of imported draft and bottled beers. They also cater, have a private party room, and you can even arrange to have a private party pig roast in the beer garden.

La Birreira

This beer garden is unique, in that it's an Italian-inspired beer garden rather than German. It is located on the rooftop of Eataly's 5th Avenue restaurant and market. Seating is estimated at about 200 and, with its retractable roof and heat lamps, this is a year-round spot. La Birreira features Italian and American craft beers and wine served on tap. The food menu is Italian with influences from Austria and Germany, designed to pair perfectly with beer.

While not your typical beer garden, Local West, located across the street from Madison Square Garden, offers its Roof Deck with awning and about 15 tables for relaxing with a drink.

Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten

Loreley is the first of its kind Biergarten in New York City. Located in the lower east side, Loreley was modeled after the "Brauhaus" in Cologne (Köln). The restaurant features German comfort food and a great selection of imported German beers and wine. This busy spot offers plenty of seating in a laid-back atmosphere. Loreley has a second location, Loreley Williamsburg, located at 64 Frost Street in Brooklyn.

Loreley Williamsburg is the second, more quaint location for Loreley, with a unique outdoor space. Loreley is known for its German comfort food and a great selection of imported German beers and wine. Here you can enjoy dinner, snacks or brunch on the weekend. The original location, Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten, is located in the lower east side at 7 Rivington Street.

Mission Dolores

This unique courtyard style beer garden offers revolving, eclectic drafts, local brews, plus some Belgian and German imports. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating and, to the delight of many, an Indiana Jones pinball machine.

Nurnberger Bierhaus

The Biergarten at Nurnberger Bierhaus is open seasonally. The Bierhaus offers a great variety of German draft and bottled beer, a couple bottled domestics and a good variety of wines. They have an extensive menu of German fare. Their brunch, served on weekends, was voted best ethnic brunch by the New York Post.

Radegast Hall & Biergarten

Radegast Hall & Biergarten has a great variety of German beer with drafts available in pints, liters and pitchers and a seemingly endless list of bottled beers. Authentic German food includes appetizers, entrees, grill items, even brunch. Radegast also features live entertainment on Wednesdays and Thursdays and regular food and drink specials.

Spuyten Duyvil

The Spuyten Buyvil, located in Williamsburg, specializes in Belgian beer, but includes bottles from a great variety of countries, including England, Germany, the Netherlands, even Japan and Sri Lanka! For snacks they offer plates of cheese, meats and pickles. And if you're not sure what to order, the proprietors will be glad to share their substantial expertise.

The Garden @ Studio Square

Studio Square says "bringing the spirit and culinary traditions of an open-air German beer garden with one of the most diverse urban landscapes in the world, Studio Square is a destination for all to gather, eat and drink in modern merriment." They have both an indoor bar and an open-air square with communal tables and covered patio. A nice variety of domestic and import lagers, pale ales, pilsners and more are served from their custom tap. The food menu includes German and American grill favorites and sandwiches. Studio Square also has space for private events.

The Lot on Tap
West 30th Street & 10th Ave, New York, NY 10001

The Lot on Tap is expected to open in June 2010 by chef Tom Colicchio at the north end of the High Line. This 350-seat beer garden will serve domestic wines, local beers and sodas; food will be supplied by a rotating selection of five food trucks.

Zum Schneider features an indoor biergarten offering 12 German beers on tap, a selection of bottled beers, a traditional Bavarian-German menu, and seasonal specialties. Owner Sylvester Schneider is a native of Bavaria.
