Learn more about New York City Fire Museum NYC

The Eldridge Street Synagogue opened in 1887, the first newly built American synagogue, celebrating the religious freedoms America offered. The synangogue flourished for more than 50 years, but then with changing times, the synagogue suffered, but never failed. In the late 20th century, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. A major restoration was completed in 2007 and the museum now offers tours, concerts, lectures, festivals and other cultural events. The Museum at Eldridge Street states the following mission: "to strengthen, support, protect and promote the 1887 landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue as a dynamic cultural and educational center that tells the story of Jewish immigrant life at the turn of the last century...". Mission accomplished!
